MUST-HAVE CAR EMERGENCY KIT ITEMS: BE PREPARED FOR THE UNEXPECTED

May 31, 2023

First-Aid | George's Complete Auto Repair

When it comes to traveling by car, having a well-equipped emergency kit is vital for your safety and peace of mind. Whether you're planning a long road trip or simply commuting to work, being prepared for unexpected situations can make all the difference. Below, we will explore must-have items for your car emergency kit, ensuring you're equipped to handle various roadside emergencies.

1. BASIC TOOLS

A set of basic tools is essential for minor roadside repairs and adjustments. Include items such as a wrench, pliers, screwdrivers (both flathead and Phillips), and an adjustable crescent wrench. These tools can help you address common issues like loose screws, minor engine adjustments, or battery terminal tightening.

2. JUMPER CABLES

A dead car battery can be a frustrating situation, but with a set of jumper cables, you can quickly get back on the road. Choose heavy-duty, properly insulated cables and ensure they are long enough to reach between vehicles. Familiarize yourself with the correct jumper cable connection procedure and the location of your car's battery.

3. SPARE TIRE, JACK, AND LUG WRENCH

Flat tires can happen at any time, so having a functional spare tire, a jack, and a lug wrench is crucial. Make sure your spare tire is properly inflated and in good condition. Familiarize yourself with the process of changing a tire, including the location of your car's jack points and how to safely remove and secure lug nuts.

4. REFLECTIVE WARNING TRIANGLES OR ROAD FLARES

In the case of a breakdown or an accident, it's important to alert other drivers to your presence on the side of the road. Reflective warning triangles or road flares can serve as visual warnings, especially during low-light conditions. Place them a safe distance behind your vehicle to provide advance warning to approaching traffic.

5. TIRE PRESSURE GAUGE AND SEALANT

Keep a tire pressure gauge in your emergency kit to regularly check your tire pressure and adjust as needed. Additionally, consider carrying a can of tire sealant to temporarily repair small punctures, allowing you to reach a service station safely.

6. PORTABLE PHONE CHARGER

In today's day and age, a dead phone battery can be a significant inconvenience, especially during emergencies. Include a portable phone charger or a power bank in your car emergency kit to ensure you can make emergency calls, access maps, or contact roadside assistance when needed.

And if you find yourself needing some emergency car repairs, make sure to stop at George's Complete Auto Repair. We have a wide variety of services which you can see in the "Services" section in the menu.
