The next step is compression. Here, the piston moves back up, compressing the fuel-air mixture inside the cylinder. This compression is crucial because it makes the mixture more volatile and ready for combustion. The more efficiently the mixture is compressed, the more powerful the engine’s output will be. At the peak of the compression stroke, the air-fuel mixture is tightly packed in the cylinder, increasing its potential energy.
Now, things really start to heat up—literally. In the power stroke, a spark from the spark plug ignites the highly compressed fuel-air mixture. This ignition causes a mini-explosion, forcing the piston back down. This downward movement of the piston is what generates the power needed to turn the crankshaft, which ultimately drives the wheels of your car. This is the only phase that actually produces energy; the other three strokes prepare and clear the way for the power stroke to do its job.
The final phase in the 4-stroke engine cycle is the exhaust stroke. Once the power stroke is complete, the cylinder is filled with waste gasses that need to be expelled. As the piston moves back up again, the exhaust valve opens, allowing the gasses to be pushed out through the exhaust system. This clears the cylinder for the next cycle, ensuring that the engine can continue operating efficiently.
