FLUID MAINTENANCE: WHEN TO KNOW IT'S TIME TO CHANGE YOUR CAR'S FLUIDS

June 30, 2023

Engine | George's Complete Auto Repair

Regular fluid maintenance is essential for keeping your car running smoothly and ensuring optimal performance and longevity. Various fluids, such as engine oil, coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid, play vital roles in lubricating, cooling, and operating different components of your vehicle. Over time, these fluids can degrade, become contaminated, or lose their effectiveness, potentially leading to mechanical issues if not addressed promptly. Here are some key indicators that can help you determine when it's time to change your car's fluids, ensuring your vehicle stays in top shape.

CONSULT YOUR VEHICLE'S OWNER'S MANUAL

One of the most reliable sources of information regarding fluid change intervals is your vehicle's owner's manual. It provides specific guidelines from the manufacturer about when various fluids should be changed. The intervals may vary based on factors such as the make, model, year, and driving conditions of your vehicle. Refer to the manual to determine the recommended maintenance schedule for each fluid.

FOLLOW THE MILEAGE OR TIME RECOMMENDATIONS

Fluid change intervals are often based on either mileage or time, whichever comes first. Pay attention to both factors to ensure timely fluid changes. For example, engine oil may need to be changed every 5,000 miles or every six months, whichever occurs first. By keeping track of your vehicle's mileage and maintenance schedule, you can adhere to the recommended intervals and prevent potential issues caused by old or contaminated fluids.

MONITOR FLUID APPEARANCE AND CONDITION

While following the manufacturer's recommendations is important, it's also crucial to visually inspect and assess the condition of your car's fluids. For engine oil, check its color and consistency. Fresh oil appears amber or light brown, while dirty or deteriorated oil is darker and may contain particles. Similarly, the coolant should be clear and bright, while a rusty or murky appearance indicates a need for replacement. Transmission
fluid should be pinkish-red and not have a burnt smell.

Additionally, pay attention to any signs of fluid leaks, which can be an indication of a problem that requires immediate attention. If you notice fluid puddles under your vehicle or a sudden drop in fluid levels, have your car inspected by a professional to identify and address the underlying issue.
