HOW TO CHANGE THE ENGINE OIL IN A NISSAN ALTIMA 5TH GEN AND NEWER

October 28, 2023

Oil | George's Complete Auto Repair

Today, we're embarking on an interesting and simple DIY project under the hood of the 5th generation Nissan Altima and its successors - in other words, 2013 and newer).

You see, owning a car is not just about driving; it's about nurturing your automotive companion. And one of the most fundamental ways to show that love is by changing the engine oil. So grab your toolbox, and let's uncover the secrets to keeping your Altima's heart running strong.

STEP 1: GATHER YOUR ARSENAL

Before you dive into the oil-changing adventure, you'll need to assemble your toolkit. This should include an oil filter wrench, a funnel, a drain pan, a socket set, and, of course, the star of the show, the fresh engine oil. Make sure you've got the manufacturer-recommended oil type and filter ready; your Altima deserves nothing less.

STEP 2: PREPARE FOR ACTION

Park your Altima on a level surface and let the engine run for a few minutes. This warms up the oil, making it flow more freely during the draining process. Afterward, turn off the engine and put on your safety gear. It's time to get down and dirty.

STEP 3: LOCATE THE OIL DRAIN PLUG

Slide under your Altima and look for the oil pan. The oil drain plug, typically a hexagonal bolt, can be found beneath the pan. Before you proceed, place the drain pan beneath the plug to catch the old oil. Now, loosen the plug with your socket set and let the old oil flow out. This is where you can bask in the satisfaction of giving your Altima a fresh start.

STEP 4: CHANGE THE FILTER

With the oil draining, it's the perfect time to change the oil filter. Use your filter wrench to remove the old one. But here's a pro tip: before screwing on the new filter, apply a bit of fresh oil to the gasket. This helps create a proper seal. Screw in the new filter, and you're ready to move on.

STEP 5: FILL 'ER UP

Pop the hood and find the oil filler cap. Remove it and place a funnel in the opening. Now, it's time to add the new oil. Consult your Altima's manual for the specific oil capacity, as it may vary depending on the engine. Slowly pour in the new oil, and don't forget to double-check the dipstick to ensure you've reached the correct level.

STEP 6: CHECK AND CLEANUP

Once you've added the appropriate amount of oil, put the oil filler cap back on. Now, start the engine and let it run for a minute to circulate the new oil. Afterward, turn it off and wait a bit for the oil to settle. Check the oil level one last time to ensure it's within the recommended range.
